I am offering a RARE 109lb. Arm & Hammer ' LONDON 'pattern blacksmith anvil. It has been said that Arm & Hammer anvils are truly the Rolls Royce of blacksmith anvils.
Made by Columbus Anvil and Forging Company of Columbus, Ohio, this anvil features a clean face and edges that have only a few minor nicks. It has a forged wrought iron top with a Tool Steel face plate. It has the customary Cast Steel base with the oval depression. The trademark reads: 'ARM and HAMMER' (Arm holding a Hammer) 'WROUGHT IRON', and the weight stamp '109' is below the trademark. The letters 'BH & M CO E are stamped on the opposite side from the logo. It also has the letters BELM stamped above that, but I have no idea what they mean. I speculate it was either the original owner or subsequent owner of the anvil.
It ended up in my late father-in-law's possession in Mississippi. He used it in the fifties and sixties for making horseshoes. He later fabricated some benders that would put the initial arc in the shoe prior to doing all the other work on them.
The serial number stamped on the front foot appears to be 23645. All of the numbers are clear except the '3', but I made it out before painting. Arm and Hammer only produced a little over 51,000 anvils between 1906 and 1915, so the serial number fits in t Pictures say a thousand words, so take a real close look at the pictures. Columbus Anvil and Forging Company produced less than 52,000 Arm & Hammer anvils while in business. According to Richard Postman, 'the Arm and Hammer anvil was undoubtedly one of the finest wrought anvils ever manufactured anyw' He goes on to say that the condition of the Arm & Hammer anvil's face plates faired better than any other make he had recorded. This anvil would make any blacksmiths, farriers or collectors day. This anvil has an excellent rebound and a nice clear ring.
